Waiter at the Old China Cafe, Jalan Panggong, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
12th June 2009.
I highly recommend checking out this remarkably quaint Malaysian Chinese gem of an establishment. In an attempt to preserve the physical heritage of the old Chinatown (Chee Chong Kai), the Old China Cafe started running business in 1997, serving up Baba-Nyona-Chinese cuisine.
The background on this place is that it was previously occupied by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Laundry Association. Apparently, the classic faded black and white portraits hanging so cooly on the walls of this antique-y joint are of the members of the association from the previous tenants. Everything from the tables and chairs, the slow spinning fan to the shadowy green lamp shades hanging from the ceiling add to its charm.
If you're looking to find a spot in KL that truly resembles Chinatown of Malaysia, head here for lunch or even a tea-time snack.
Don't forget to sample their Pie-Tee (Tophats) and Tauhu Bakar (Stuffed tofu). Oh and by the way- it goes beautifully with some authentically Malaysian Tea (Boh!) or it's selection of Malaccan Coffee.

Appom Balik Uncle on Petaling Street (he's been around for 40 years btw), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
12th June 2009. One of the few remaining true Petaling Street relics.
Ps. If you see this guy, make sure to look out for:
1. the Soya Bean guy to try the infamous KL Tau Foo Far (Soy Bean Curd with sugar syrup) at the cross junction of Petaling St.
2. About 7 paces away on the other side of the street, look for the infamous Air Mata Kuching stall the most refreshing thing you could opt for on a hot humid Malaysian afternoon.
Essentially, just gaze out to the busiest stalls on the street- flocked to by the local Chinese customers and you know you've hit the jackpot.
Au Revoir' for now!
